Defence School Mentor (DSM) Program
Supporting Defence Families at Holsworthy Public School
What is the DSM Program?
Established in 2002, the Defence School Mentor (DSM) Program aims to minimise the educational and emotional impacts of the mobile military lifestyle. The program is dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of children of Fulltime Serving ADF members and their families by fostering strong engagement with the school community and facilitating access to in-school wellbeing supports.
In collaboration with existing school staff, DSMs connect students of ADF families to in-school wellbeing supports and the school community. Particular focus is given to key transition periods, including entry to and departure from a school due to postings, as well as times of parental absence resulting from deployments, exercises, or training courses. Through this support, the program helps Defence students feel connected and supported, while also strengthening the school’s capacity to respond to the unique challenges associated with the military lifestyle.
Our DSM - Mrs Hennessy
I feel truly honoured to support the students of our Defence families. As the spouse of an ADF member and a mother of three school-aged children, I understand first-hand the unique lifestyle Defence families lead, along with the challenges that can come with frequent moves and change.
In my role as Defence School Mentor (DSM) at Holsworthy Public School, I am passionate about helping our Defence students feel welcomed, supported, and connected. I strive to foster a strong sense of belonging, where students feel happy, build resilience, achieve their personal best, and develop meaningful, lasting relationships within our school community.
A Welcoming Hand
Starting a new school can be daunting—but for Defence children, it’s a regular part of life. At Holsworthy Public School, our DSM is a familiar and friendly face to support each child’s journey, making sure they feel valued, safe, and confident every step of the way.
How I can support your child
My role includes facilitating small group activities, classroom visits, and one-on-one check-ins. I also run Defence Club during lunch times, providing a relaxed and supportive space where Defence students can connect, build friendships, and enjoy a range of fun activities together. If you feel your child would benefit from attending Defence Club, I warmly encourage them to come along.
To best support our Defence students, we encourage families to keep the school informed of any upcoming postings, relocations, deployments, extended training courses, or exercises, as well as any other Defence-related circumstances that may impact their child. Sharing this information helps us put the right supports in place and ensure each student feels understood, supported, and cared for throughout these times.
The role of the DSM
Our DSM plays an important role in the school by:
- Welcoming new Defence students and helping them adjust to their new environment
- Supporting students during times of change, such as relocation or deployment
- Encouraging social connections and emotional wellbeing
- Working closely with teachers, parents, and support services
- Raising awareness of Defence-related challenges within the school community
Why This Matters
Children from Defence families may:
- Change schools frequently
- Experience extended absences of a parent or caregiver
- Face challenges forming or maintaining friendships
- Live separately from a parent due to service requirements
While most Defence children adapt well, the additional support of a DSM can make a significant difference in easing transitions and ensuring they thrive.
