Tara Wood - Defence School Mentor
Holsworthy Public School has a rich history and affiliation with the Defence community, being located so closely to Holsworthy Barracks, and serves a multi-cultural community with a blend of Defence force and civilian families.
The Department of Defence and the Department of Education recognise the impact that the mobile military lifestyle can have on the academic and social development of some children. The Defence School Mentor (DSM) Program was established in 2002 and is funded by the Defence Member and Family Support Branch (DMFS) to facilitate the best possible educational outcome for children of Australian Defence Force Members. The DSM’s role is to provide direct support and assistance within the school to Defence children their families, therefore minimising the impact of mobility on education.
Students from Defence families are subject to unique challenges, such as;
· Changing schools on a number of occasions.
· Parents and caregivers being absent for prolonged periods.
· Academic and social challenges associated with a mobile lifestyle.
· Some families living separately due to work and personal circumstances.
The Defence School Mentor (DSM) offers assistance and support to Defence students and their families and aims to raise awareness of the unique needs of these families due to the military lifestyle within the school community. The DSM is not a teacher or counsellor, but a conduit between these professional services, facilitating information sharing and appropriate referral to support services as required.
Leaving behind friends and a familiar environment to go to a new primary school can be a daunting prospect, and for students whose parents work for the Australian Defence Force it is part of their reality. By primary school age kids have got their friends and networks, so to leave that and move far away can be a tough transition. The DSM is a friendly face to help students with their questions, social skills and support their wellbeing, making their transition as smooth as possible. The DSM’s focus is on each student’s wellbeing as they acclimatise to a new school and friendships, or changed routines during prolonged parental absences.
Generally, Defence students cope very well with the mobile lifestyle, however, there are occasions where additional support can make for a better experience. The DSM engages with and supports students, teachers, parents and carers, so the children of Defence families can thrive at Holsworthy Public School.
“It is such a privilege to work with the children whose families and caregivers serve our nation. I tell the children I have the best job in the school and I genuinely mean it. The highlight for me is seeing the Defence students become part of our wonderful school community, forming friendships and connection, helping to build their resilience and watching them shine”.
